About the Artist

5 Going on 50, Needle Felted Flip Doll © 2017 Jill NewmanOnce upon a time, I was a lawyer, but I have always pursued artistic endeavors as well.  I officially quit my job to become an artist almost 20 years ago.  In 2011, when I discovered needle-felting, it was love at first poke.  After experimenting with the usual felted flowers and such, I decided to make things that I would actually wear -- modern, funky, colorful jewelry.  Many of my first designs were inspired by peacock feathers, animal prints, and other beautiful patterns and forms in nature.  And so, Zazzy Peacock Studios was born!  Now that I have discovered a love of teaching, Zazzy Peacock Studios has entered a new exciting phase, offering fun classes, parties, and summer camps at my new studio at Artists & Makers in Rockville.  I am having a wonderful time making sample projects and planning classes and parties.  At the same time, I am pushing myself outside my comfort zone to take my felting and art to the next level.  For example, I recently completed my very first doll, which was extra challenging because it was a self-portrait and a flip doll with four different views.  I am honored that my doll, "5 Going on 50" was included in the exhibit, "Revisioning the Flip Doll: Exploring Our Connections" at the Parklawn location of Artists & Makers in Rockville, MD. The exhibit featured incredible dolls by the wonderful Erika Cleveland, as well as flip dolls created by local artists and flip dolls made by homeless women  at a series of workshops offered by Erika.
